"Gentleman George Barclay"
George was the only rider along with Russ Dent, to ride in all four seasons for Sunderland Speedway in the 70's. Ill health meant that he couldn't see out the full final season in 1974, so his retirement meant a big loss to the team and supporters alike.
Adored by the fans, especially the ladies, it is easy to see how he earned his nick-name, "Gentleman George".
George comes second to Russ in the match stats:
- Matches: 120 League and cup
- Rides: 486 League and cup
- Points: 726 + 74 League only
However George comes out as Top Bouns man, with 74 bonus points.
George's average peaked at 7.21 in 1971. He proved to be "Mr Consistent" with his averages of 7.21 in 1971, 6.88 in 1972, 6.10 in 1973, and 6.43 in 1974.
George rode in 24 other assorted matches for the Stars:

Key Achievements In 1973, George along with his son Terry Barclay, won the Best Pairs meeting at the Boldon track. He was also part of the team that won the Four Team competition in 1972, although he missed the last leg through injury.
George Barclay was the perfect team man, with a smooth, easy style.
Today, North East fans still look forward to seeing "Gentleman George", and he has made numerous visits to see old pals from his days as a "Star".
