The lads were within an inch of winning the meeting outright, robbed by two late disqualifications in their last two heats, one was a most contentious decision. Young Chris Ferguson who was on a maximum, was leading when he locked-up on a dodgy track, he recovered without losing first place, however the second place rider had laid down his machine, at which point the ref stopped the race, blaming Ferguson for causing the stoppage, even though he hadn't touched the following rider. The other exclusion was perhaps understandable, as the Karlis Ezergailis tussled with Chris Courage for the lead, unfortunately they both came to grief.
The meeting was arranged by Hackney speedway fans, Paul Tadman and Chris Fenn, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to them for giving us the chance to see the Sunderland race jackets in action once more. Special thanks must also go to Brian White and Weymouth Speedway for holding this event, and for making us so welcome after our long trip down to the South coast So Sunderland are unbeaten after Paul Macllvaney brought them back to earn a draw in the Tyne and Wear meeting held at Newcastle last year, and now at Weymouth. That's a better start than we made in the 64 and 71 !!!!! We thank Paul Macllvaney for the loan of his "Stars" race jackets used at Weymouth, who knows we may see them in action again in the future.
Also it was nice to meet up with Vic Harding's sister Beverly, she was there with her Mother and other members of her family. They thanked us for remembering Vic so long after he raced for Sunderland. No, we haven't forgotten the "Canvey Island Kid".
