Gerry came to Sunderland from Rochdale âHornetsâ, having done some training and second halves
at Leicester, Long Eaton, and Belle Vue. In 1971 he managed 22 League and Cup appearances for
There were times when Gerry really looked like he would make good, but at other times he
struggled. However just like John Robson, he put in a lot of effort for his average of 4.00 points in
that very difficult first season.
The high point for Gerry was his seven points scored against Boston in the Home League Match in
1971. Bettered possibly by his seven points against Workington, again in a Home League Match,
and including wins over Lou Sansom and Taffy Owen.
One thing Gerry did achieve in his time as a Sunderland rider, he was the young heartthrob for all
the girls at the Boldon track.
Although his career was short, he still remains interested in the Sport and still has a Speedway
bike in his garage. He was also a very welcome guest at our 2002 and subsequent Reunions.
