We held our seventh Sunderland Speedway reunion on the
17th November 2007. Seventh Heaven as those who attended
described our get-together of riders, supporters and friends.
Riders who attended were, Russ Dent, Graeme Smith, Pete
Wrathall, Gerry Richardson, Andy Meldrum, Brian Johnson,
Lloyd Dobson, Graham Hartley, as well as former team
manager Colin Armitstead and Promoter Kenny Taylor.
George Barclay was unable to attend, as was Brian Havelock.
Guest riders were Pete Wigley, Rob Grant, Dai Evens and
Geoff Bouchard, making his first visit to our reunion. It was
also nice to see the late Kenny Smith, the Scunthorpe
manager and then promoter of the club. And with Kenny came
the ever-popular Ginger Abigail who brought along a bike that
once belonged to former World Champion, Ove Fundin.
Richard Greer was a late cancellation, Richard has attended
twice in the past.
Held at the popular Pullman Lodge Hotel, the evening was
hosted by BBC sports presenter Jeff Brown. Sunderland fan
Jeff did hid usual first class job, which included introducing the
riders, and entertaining us with his interviews. Jeff like former
skipper Russ Dent has attended every one of our reunions
much appreciated by us all. The room was packed with
memorabilia, bike, photographs, race jackets etc. An Old film
was shown on the TV that brought back some memories!
After a first class buffet, the disco played until the early hours
of the morning. And as the disco blasted out Shalamars hit
song Were gonna make this a night to remember and Simply
the best by Tina Turner we were left reflecting yes, it was the
best, the very best. But havent we said that after all of our
Seven reunions, seven winners .....something we can be proud
And our guests have made it so!
